CHARON was shot on DSLR cameras largely on weekends over a year-and-change-long period. The idea was to treat the film as an experiment. To shoot at sunrise and sunset wherever possible (not including longer scenes with heavier dialogue) and to seek out a cinematic nighttime landscape for the driving sequences in Los Angeles. For performers, director Daniel Casey went first to actors who were longtime friends and collaborators (and in most cases, multi-hyphenate filmmakers themselves) in order to build a familial dynamic around the film, and more importantly; a happy set. Behind the camera, Daniel maintained a similar approach himself, working with longtime friends and collaborators Tom Meredith (cinematographer) and Tom Horvath (producer, Dan’s college roommate).
For post production, the team behind the short were joined by famed composer and performer Makeup and Vanity Set for the short’s incredible original score, and the talented team at Maere Studios for a small handful of visual effects.
